Mitigation of injection-induced seismicity on undrained faults in granite using cyclic fluid injection: A laboratory study

چکیده

Cyclic fluid injection has been demonstrated as a plausibly effective and controllable strategy to mitigate the seismic risks during hydraulic stimulation. The mechanism involved remains largely unconstrained, our ability control activation of critically stressed, locally undrained faults is still limited. Injection-induced these can be one most threatening scenarios they likely perturb stability nearby beyond stimulation volume. Here, we perform series laboratory tests on in low-permeability granite offer insights into cyclic possible solution for risk mitigation. Our results show that promotes pressure diffusion faults, but reduction moment release depends several cycle-related factors, such critical frequency. Particularly, could inefficient if very close predicted at fault failure, or over-reduced cause excess long-term frictional healing. A proper design parameters thus essential balance energy budget between energy. study reveals effectiveness also dependent drainage conditions, requirements, well dynamic responses faulted reservoirs, which guide future development injection.

INDUCED SEISMICITY. Seismicity triggered by fluid injection-induced aseismic slip.

Anthropogenic fluid injections are known to induce earthquakes. The mechanisms involved are poorly understood, and our ability to assess the seismic hazard associated with geothermal energy or unconventional hydrocarbon production remains limited. We directly measure fault slip and seismicity induced by fluid injection into a natural fault. We observe highly dilatant and slow [~4 micrometers pe...

Investigation of Injection-induced Seismicity Using a Coupled Fluid Flow and Rate/state Friction Model

This paper describes a numerical investigation of seismicity induced during injection into a single, isolated fracture. A model was developed and used that couples (1) fluid flow and (2) rate and state friction. Rate and state friction theory describes how friction on a fault depends on both sliding velocity and past sliding history. Rate and state friction is used widely in earthquake modeling...

Hydrogeologic controls on induced seismicity in crystalline basement rocks due to fluid injection into basal reservoirs.

A series of Mb 3.8-5.5 induced seismic events in the midcontinent region, United States, resulted from injection of fluid either into a basal sedimentary reservoir with no underlying confining unit or directly into the underlying crystalline basement complex. The earthquakes probably occurred along faults that were likely critically stressed within the crystalline basement. These faults were lo...

Laboratory Investigation on the Influence of Cyclic Water Injection Pressure on Sands Hydraulic Conductivity

Hydraulic conductivity variations around the boreholes in uniformly graded sands for cyclic water injection pressure have been evaluated by laboratory tests. Prototype laboratory devices have been designed and constructed for this research. The cell has a capability to model the well, the boundary condition and to measure the hydraulic conductivity. While increasing water injection pressure, hy...

Induced seismicity associated with fluid injection into a deep well in Youngstown, Ohio

[1] Over 109 small earthquakes (Mw 0.4–3.9) were detected during January 2011 to February 2012 in the Youngstown, Ohio area, where there were no known earthquakes in the past. These shocks were close to a deep fluid injection well. The 14 month seismicity included six felt earthquakes and culminated with aMw 3.9 shock on 31 December 2011. Among the 109 shocks, 12 events greater than Mw 1.8 were...
